The debut EP of violinist Basil Alter, MOONCAT, releases January 30th. The four-track project is brought to life by Basil and veteran Windham Hill Records label bassist Michael Manring. The music is diverse, spanning traditional genres including neo-classical, jazz, and experimental, the album being most united through the four strings of each instrument and the virtuosity included within.
The first two tracks are part of a two-movement work, “Two children’s songs for violin and electric bass,” composed when Basil was 19. The third track, Mooncat, is more of a traditional jazz chart played as a duet between the two instruments. The final track, Laika, is named after the Soviet space dog sent into space as part of the Sputnik 2 mission.
